“Virtually all mothers can breastfeed provided they have accurate information, and support within their families and communities and from the health care system.” (World Health Organization, 2003)

You do not need to make a decision about how to feed until your baby is born.

While you are pregnant take some time to visit groups where you can chat to other mother about realities of life with a baby.

Many mothers who were not sure about breastfeeding when they were pregnant have given it a go and say they are glad they did. Some of these have gone on to become breastfeeding peer supporters. You might like to talk mum-to-mum with a peer supporter.

Staff will support you in whatever choice you make. To help you make a fully informed choice, they are trained to share evidence - based practice about infant feeding with you.

The Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for around six months and continued breastfeeding alongside the introduction of solid foods for as long as the mother wishes.
